Revert "auxdisplay: hd44780: Fix an API misuse in hd44780.c"

This reverts commit 36771754 which is
commit 9b98a7d2 upstream.

It breaks the Android kernel abi and can be brought back in the future
in an abi-safe way if it is really needed.
